Over four pages, the current issue of wettbewerbe aktuell (07|26) shows what became of our competition design for Europa-Allee in Frankfurt am Main. The City of Frankfurt's international competition ended for us with second prize in 2017; after a revision we were awarded the commission.
The F.A.Z. Tower consists of two slender slabs above a podium, shifted against one another: one half cantilevers east towards the high-rise skyline, the other faces west towards the Europagarten. Completed in 2023, it is now the headquarters of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung.
The neighbouring Timber Pioneer is Frankfurt's first timber-hybrid building on this scale. 1,800 cubic metres of spruce store around 1,800 tonnes of CO?. Prefabrication produced some 1,000 square metres of shell per week, and the structure was erected in fifteen weeks. Its skeleton construction allows components to be dismantled and reused.
