Construction work on the M50, a key project in the Macherei Berlin-Kreuzberg neighbourhood, is making significant progress. The revitalisation of the building, led by Eike Becker_Architekten, combines historical substance with contemporary building requirements - a challenging task.
Progress on the façade construction
The substructure for the new unitised façade is almost complete. Assembly of the façade elements has begun on the east façade. The replacement of the old façade required an unusual measure: two upper storeys had to be temporarily removed in order to cope with the wind forces during dismantling.
Measures to stabilise the structure
As the building lost its original stability during the construction work, extensive stabilisation measures were required. Additional bracing shaft walls and shotcrete application strengthen the basic structure. The stabilisation is being carried out step by step from the bottom to the top.
Close coordination and modern planning
The existing building presents daily challenges. The standards of the past no longer meet the safety standards of today. The details are currently being finalised together with the specialist planning team.
With the revitalisation of the M50, a future-proof building is being created in Kreuzberg that is geared towards today's requirements and takes into account the historical character of the existing building.
