The Garden – 276 flats built from mid-2013

Where there used to be the border checkpoint for West Berliners going to East Berlin in former times a new building project will begin from mid-2013 on. It will include 276 flats in 17 houses with an urban planning concept that refers back to the late 19th century models in Berlin: The 17 houses cover one half of the full quarter and will be linked by narrow walking paths and gardens that are in blossom for part of the year. The six houses in the Chauseestrasse row of buildings are up to eight floors high and form a gate, with the left and right parts designed for rental flats.
From the four-storey opening one axis points in the direction of the neo-Gothic cemetery chapel of the Cathedral parish, with three green inner courts along the walkway. Adjacent to this building there are four terraced houses towards the northwest and nine towards the southeast. All are up to nine floors high, with the two top floors in penthouse style. All houses have small gardens on their front and rear sides – thus the name The Garden – making this a rare feature in such a central location. The gardens will be designed by the occupants jointly, thus creating additional free space that links the individually designed, plastic buildings.
